Sheikh Shahjahan Suspended: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) suspended Sheikh Shahjahan, the main accused in the Sandeshkhali case, for 6 years. Sheikh Shahjahan sent into custody
Additional Director General of Police (South Bengal) Supratim Sarkar said Sheikh Shahjahan was arrested from a house in Minakhan police station area, about 30 km from Sandeshkhali on the outskirts of Sundarban in North 24 Parganas district. Police said that Sheikh was hiding in that house along with some associates. The court has sent him to police custody for 10 days.
Calcutta High Court had said on Wednesday itself that CBI, Enforcement Directorate (ED) or West Bengal Police can arrest Sheikh. Within 24 hours Sheikh was taken into custody.

On January 5, a mob of about a thousand people attacked ED officials in Sandeshkhali when they had gone to raid Sheikh’s premises in connection with the investigation into the alleged ration distribution scam in the state. Since then he was absconding.
