MeitY Permission will be mandatory before launching AI model or product

AI Technology: There has been a lot of discussion about Artificial Intelligence i.e. AI technology in the whole world including India for quite some time now. This technology has earned a lot of fame all over the world in just the last few months. There are many advantages of this technology, but there are also many major disadvantages.

Because of this, the Government of India has taken a big decision. The government has said that it will be mandatory for any company in India to take permission from the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology of the Government of India to launch its AI model or any AI product.

Government made rules for AI

The Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued a new advisory for companies regarding the launch of Artificial Intelligence (AI) models in India. Before launching AI models in India, any company i.e. platforms or intermediaries will have to take explicit permission from the Centre.

MeitY had also earlier issued an advisory for social media platforms in December last year, directing them to follow the existing IT rules. The government had specifically advised social media platforms to deal with deepfake technology and directed them to follow IT rules.

It is very important to keep these things in mind

Important things to keep in mind before launching AI models in India:

Permission required: All platforms will have to take explicit permission from the government before launching AI models. Companies will have to inform their users about the disadvantages of that AI technology.

It is important to follow the rules: Intermediaries will have to perform their duties as mentioned in the Information Technology (Intermediaries Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.

It is important to take care of the content: Social media platforms and companies should avoid placing, sharing and modifying illegal content on the platform. Apart from this, they should avoid one-sidedness or discrimination while protecting the electoral process.

User awareness is important: Users should be aware of the harm caused by AI-generated images and related issues ranging from account suspension to legal action.

Labeling required: Companies will also be required to label misleading or potentially misleading content on their platforms so that users can easily understand that the content may be false or misleading.
