Sahir Ludhianvi Birth Anniversary: There have been many poets in India whose names have been recorded in history. One of them is Sahir Ludhianvi and he was born on 8 March 1921 in Ludhiana. Born in a Jagirdar family, Sahir Ludhiwanvi’s real name was Abdul Hayi Sahir, but being from Ludhiana, he added Ludhiwanvi before his name. This was often done by poets who used to add the name of the city to which they belonged before their name.
It is believed that Sahir Ludhianvi was in love with the famous writer of that time, Amrita Pritam, but his story remained incomplete. Because of which Sahir Ludhianvi took a long break and then wrote such songs which became evergreen. Let us tell you a famous incident related to Sahir and Amrita.
Why did Sahir Ludhianvi’s love story remain incomplete?
According to reports, Sahir Ludhianvi and Amrita Pritam studied in the same college. It is also said that their love story was famous during their college days. Sahir used to write ‘najms’ and ‘ghazals’ from the beginning due to which he was famous in college. Amrita Pritam also liked him more for this reason. According to a report in Times Now, Amrita liked Sahir but her family did not want their daughter to love a Muslim. Later Sahir was expelled from that college on the advice of Amrita’s father. After leaving studies, Sahir did some small jobs and came to Lahore in the year 1943.
Here Sahir worked as an editor and published a piece in this magazine which was considered against Pakistan. According to reports, then Sahir was forced to send him back to India and Sahir came to India in the year 1949. Sahir Ludhianvi did not marry, although another woman Sudha Malhotra came into his life but that relationship of Sahir also did not succeed.

Sahir wrote the first song ‘Badal Rahi Hai Zindagi’ for the film Azadi Ki Raah Par in 1949. After this, ‘Don’t leave now’, ‘Don’t promise’, ‘Babul ki duaayen’, ‘Udein jab jab julfen teri’, ‘Yeh desh hai veer jawan ka’, ‘Yeh dil tum bin kahin lagta nahi’, ‘Chu Wrote many superhit songs like ‘Lene Do Narik Hoth Ko’, ‘Mere Dil Mein Aaj Kya Hai’, ‘Main Pal Do Pal Ka Shayar Hoon’ which are evergreen even today.
According to reports, Sahir Ludhianvi had written around 700 songs. It has total of both Hindi and Urdu languages. In the year 1971, Sahir Ludhianvi was awarded Padmashree by the Government of India. He also received the Best Lyricist award twice. Sahir Ludhianvi died on 25 October 1980, but Sahir will always be alive among his fans through poetry, songs and ghazals.
