Among these, there are local chickens and hens, the most special one is the rustic chicken. People living in forest areas also colloquially call it jungle cock. Compared to normal chickens, its price is Rs 300 to 400 per kg more and its taste is also excellent. Their size is small and their color is very bright. Mainly their farming is done in the forest areas of the district only. The maximum weight of these special rustic chickens is up to two and a quarter kilos, whereas the weight of chickens ranges from one and a quarter to one and a half kilos.

Suresh Paswan, resident of Bakhriya village of Majhauliya block of the district, does farming of chickens of many species. These include everything from desi to Kadaknath and special rustic chicken. Suresh says that generally the price of ordinary breed of chickens is Rs 160 to 180 per kg. Which increases to Rs 200 to Rs 220 per kg on special days. Whereas the price of local chickens is Rs 350 to 400 per kg. But the price of these special rustic chickens found in the forest areas here is more expensive than mutton. At present the price of mutton is Rs 550-600 per kg. Whereas the price of this special wild rustic chicken of Champaran is Rs 700 to 800 per kg. The special thing is that the chicken of this special species is not sold in cut form, but whole.

Tastes better than mutton
Suresh says that actually indigenous chickens are reared in many states of the country. But there is something different about these wild rustic chickens reared in the forest areas of West Champaran. The taste of these chickens is very hot and the taste is better than mutton. The method of preparing these wild chickens is also different compared to other chickens. Actually, they are cooked on low flame along with the skin. There are fans of the taste of these chickens in Champaran, Patna, Raxaul and even Nepal. Suresh says that a large number of people from Patna’s Kankarbagh, Bagaha, Narkatiaganj, Raxaul and Nepal come to his place to buy these special wild rustic chickens.
