World’s 500 Most Influential Muslims: Nearly two dozen people from India figure in the list of 500 ‘Most Influential Muslims’ in the world. At the same time, two people from India have got a place in the top 50. One is Mufti Akhtar Raza Khan and the other is Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind leader Maulana Mahmood Madani. Mufti Akhtar Raza Khan is at number 22 and Mahmood Madani at number 43. Oman-based ‘The Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Center’ has prepared this list.
This is the sixth year that RISSC has released such a list. According to the institute, there are 1.7 billion Muslims in the world today, making up about 23% of the world’s population or 1/5 of the human race. The Muslim population in India is 182,408,020, which is 14.6% of the total population.
Who is Akhtar Raza Khan?
RISSC has described 71-year-old Mufti Muhammad Akhtar Raza Khan Qadiri Al Azhari as Grand Mufti of India, Barelvi leader and spiritual guide. He is the leader of the Indian Barelvis and his followers are regarded as the Grand Mufti of India. He is the great-grandson of Ahmed Raza Khan (d. 1921), who founded the Barelvi movement in South Asia.
Who is Mahmood Madani?
Maulana Mahmood Madani, 50, is a leader and executive member of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind of India. He has influence over one crore Muslims who are members of Madani’s Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind. The source of his influence is scholarly, political, administrative. According to the institute, Maulana Mahmood Madani has gained influence for his outspoken condemnation of terrorism and unwavering support of the Indian Muslim community. Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Farooq Abdullah is also named in the list of influential Muslims.
