Pakistani court sentences student to death for sharing blasphemous content on WhatsApp

Pakistan Court Judgment: A Pakistani court has sentenced a 22-year-old student to death for blasphemy, while another minor student has been sentenced to life imprisonment. These students are accused of preparing derogatory posts against Prophet Muhammad and sharing them on WhatsApp.

Recently, while awarding the death sentence, a Punjab court said that investigation found that the students had made objectionable posts related to the wives of Prophet Mohammed. The court said, ‘The students had prepared blasphemous content with the intention of hurting the religious sentiments of Muslims.’ The student who shared the content has been sentenced to life imprisonment. The court said that the age of the accused was 17 years at the time of this crime, hence he was not given death penalty.

According to a BBC report, in the year 2022, the cyber crime branch of Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had filed a complaint regarding this, after which the court has given its verdict. FIA has alleged that during the investigation, blasphemous contents were found from three different mobile phones. On the other hand, the lawyers of both the students have said that these students have been ‘implicated in a false case’.

Slogans of ‘separate from head and body’ common in Pakistan
BBC reported that the father of the convicted students who were sentenced to death has said that he will file an appeal in the Lahore High Court regarding this case. According to media reports, raising slogans of separation of head and body is common in Pakistan. In many blasphemy cases, the people of Pakistan beat the accused to death even before the court pronounces the sentence.
