These shipwrecks were sunk during different eras such as the Classical period (460 BC), Hellenistic period (100 BC to 100 AD), Roman years (200 BC – 300 AD) and Byzantine period (800 – 900 AD).
The team has also found the remains of a recent ship. This ship dates back to the Second World War. It was made of wood and was about 100 feet long.
These unique things found in the depths of the sea
According to a report by CBS News, the ministry said that near the wreck researchers also discovered a cache of unique objects dating back to Spain, Italy, Africa and Asia Minor, including a Spanish amphora. , whose handle is stamped between 150-170 AD.
Among these things were discovered drinking vessels, terra sigillata flasks from Africa and a stone anchor from the Archaic period, which lasted from the 8th century BC to the 5th century BC. One of the six photographs of the survey released by the Ministry of Culture was of a langar.
Survey done up to 155 feet depth
All the shipwrecks and sunken treasures were found at a depth of 65 to 155 feet. From 2019 to 2023, researchers took more than 20,000 underwater photographs and used a side-scanning sonar to map the Kasos-Karpathos reef for the first time.
