Difference between Chaitra Navratri and Shardiya Navratri
- Nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshiped on the 9 days of Chaitra Navratri and Shardiya Navratri, but Ram Navami is celebrated on Mahanavami of Chaitra Navratri. Shri Ram was born on this day. On the 9th day of Shardiya Navratri, Goddess Durga fought with Mahishasura and killed him on the tenth day for the welfare of the world. On this day, Shri Ram had re-established religion by killing Ravana, the ruler of Lanka. This day is known as Dussehra (Vijayadashami).
- Shardiya Navratri is celebrated for the fulfillment of worldly desires whereas Chaitra Navratri is celebrated for the fulfillment of spiritual desires, accomplishment and salvation.
- In Chaitra Navratri there is spring and summer, whereas in Shardiya Navratri it is winter. Most of the customs and rituals of Shardiya Navratri are also followed in Chaitra Navratri. Sandhi Puja, Durga Puja are more popular during Shardiya Navratri.
- The Hindu New Year begins with Chaitra Navratri. Whereas Shardiya Navratri starts from the next day of Pitru Paksha Amavasya i.e. Sarva Pitru Amavasya.
