Chor Meghna: People of a colony in Nadia district of West Bengal have to show documents every day to enter their own country. Even the time of entry of the people of this colony into their country is fixed. The residents of an Indian settlement named Chor Meghna on the India-Bangladesh border have to face this struggle every day.
The people of this colony say that despite being Indians, we are forced to live on the other side of the barbed wire on the border. About 750 people live in this Indian colony named Chor Meghna and everyone has to always carry Aadhar card or Voter ID with them. They say that without these documents we cannot go to our own village.
Border area of India, but still beyond the barbed wire
According to a report by IndiaSpend, a pillar of the Indian border has been installed at the end of this village. Despite this, this village is not inside the fencing on the border. It is a part of India, but is still on the other side of the fencing.
One has to work hard for everything from studies to medicine.
There is a primary school in Chor Meghna village, but for further education the children have to ‘cross the border’. Many big schools are about 20 km away from the wire fence. Similarly, to get health facilities or other important things, they have to cross barbed wires.
The time of arrival and departure is also fixed
Whenever these people cross the border, the BSF personnel present there note down the names of these people and the time of entry in the register. The return time is also written. The time for coming to their own country is also fixed for the people of Chor Meghna Basti. These people are allowed entry only between 6 am to 6 pm. If someone reaches late due to any reason, then the gates open only the next day.
Demand to fix border fencing
The residents of Chor Meghna say that we only want that this problem should be resolved and our village should be connected to India. This will save us from this daily struggle. He says that right now it seems that we are outsiders.
Have been facing the problem for many decades
On 16 May 1974, a border agreement was signed between the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Bangladesh President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Due to this, this colony of thief Meghna came under the part of India. Prime Minister in 2015 Narendra Modi During his visit to Bangladesh, solutions to all such land disputes also emerged.
