Birmi, also known as Himalayan Hue or Taxus contorta, is found in the serene landscapes of Himachal. This evergreen medicinal plant, which is very helpful in the treatment of cancer, is found in Nankhadi, Kullu, Gopalpur and Rampur areas of Himachal Pradesh. According to research, this medicinal species is in danger due to its excessive use in medicines, its seeds not being ready quickly, changes in the environment, excessive illegal felling. Due to the crisis on this medicinal species, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has included it in the red list of endangered species.
Reasons for extinction
The bark, twigs and roots of this evergreen medicinal plant with its dark green leaves and red berry-like fruits produce a chemical called taxane, the mixture of which is used in medicines made for the treatment of cancer. Apart from cancer, people of these areas have also been using it for the treatment of common cold, cough, fever and pain. This species grows slowly and gets bigger.
But the local people use its wood in cultural ceremonies. Making various types of goods from its wood, illegal cutting of plant parts and clearing of forests for building construction are the reasons for its extinction. The main reason is low production and late germination of its seeds. The increasing temperature due to climate change is also putting this medicinal species in danger.
Method of prevention
The institute has suggested that great The Himalayan National Park is a highly suitable field for conservation. Apart from this, it can also be grown in Kais Wildlife Sanctuary, Churdhar and Tirthan Wildlife Sanctuaries. On behalf of the institute, 500 saplings have been planted in the surroundings of Kullu. Experts say that in the last few years, due to indiscriminate cutting of the plant in an unscientific manner, lack of proper management and conservation, there is a huge decline in its plants.
