Do you also wear fast fashion jeans? Are very harmful for the environment, scientists claim!

That favorite pair of jeans in your wardrobe may be contributing to environmental pollution on a large scale. Scientists say simply wearing “fast fashion” jeans is as bad as driving more than six miles in a car full of gas. In a study, he has explained how fast fashion jeans are harmful for the environment due to many reasons. In this, the environment is harmed from manufacturing to selling and even after use.

Researchers at Guangdong University of Technology decided to track the environmental impact of a classic pair of jeans from cotton fields to landfills. They have got very surprising results.

Fast fashion jeans are quite different from traditional jeans. They are only worn a few times before being thrown away. Every time a fast fashion item is manufactured and transported, it generates a significant amount (2.5 kg) of CO2. That’s actually 11 times larger carbon footprint than the jeans you wear over time.

To keep prices low, fast fashion companies adopt certain methods. These are made from synthetic fabrics derived from fossil fuels, which increase pollution during production. Clothes get spoiled quickly, due to which more production has to be done. To cut costs, many companies exploit workers in overseas factories where labor is cheaper and regulations are looser. To keep up with trends, companies often ship clothes by air instead of by sea, which creates a lot more emissions.

Classic jeans are made to last. They are made from more durable materials that can withstand repeated wear, washing and time. “Changing fashion trends push people to buy clothes repeatedly and use them for a short period of time to follow the latest trends,” explains Dr. Zhou. “Such high consumption has led to a significant increase in resource and energy consumption in the textile industry.”

By keeping prices deceptively low, fast fashion makes shopping look trivial. The problem doesn’t end once we throw out our fast fashion items. Most of these fabrics are not recycled, nor do they degrade naturally due to their synthetic composition.
