When did the marriage of Shri Ram and Mother Sita take place?

Sita Mata and Lord Shri Ram were married on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Margashirsha month. That is why every year this date is celebrated as Vivah Panchami or Shri Ram Vivah Utsav.

During the marriage of Goddess Sita, her father Mithila king Raja Janak had organized a swayamvar. In which King Dasharatha’s eldest son Lord Shri Ram along with other princes also participated. After Shri Ram broke the Shiv bow in the Swayamvar, he got married to Mother Sita.

Mata Sita and Shri Ram marriage story

Lord Ram is considered to be the incarnation of Vishnu. He was born as the eldest son of King Dashrath of Ayodhya city. Whereas Sita was the daughter of King Janak. It is said that Sita Ji was born from the earth.

While King Janak was plowing, he found a little girl, whom he named Sita. This is the reason why Sita ji is also known as Janak Nandini.

Once Mother Sita had lifted the bow of Lord Shiva, which no one except Parashurama could lift. In such a situation, King Janak decided that Sita would be married to whoever could lift Lord Shiva’s bow.

Then announcements were made for Sita’s swayamvar. Lord Rama went with his younger brother Lakshman and Guru Vishwamitra and participated in the swayamvara of Goddess Sita. Many other princes were also present there but no one could lift the bow of Lord Shiva.

All the heroes who came there used their strength but could not even move the bow from its place, after which Lord Ram (Shree Ram) did this on the orders of Guru Vishwamitra. As soon as he picked up Shiva’s bow, it broke into two pieces and everyone present there was astonished. After this, according to the law, Mother Sita was married to Maryada Purushottam Lord Shri Ram.

The day on which Mother Sita and Lord Ram got married was the Panchami tithi of Margashirsha month, hence Vivah Panchami is celebrated every year on this day.
