According to the report of India Heritage website, this door was built by Afghan ruler Sher Shah Suri in the 16th century. There are strings attached to the first fight for independence
On 22 September 1857, an incident happened here, which changed the name of this door. Actually, what happened was that on May 10, 1857, the soldiers in Meerut started a war of rebellion against the British rulers. The same night they started marching towards Delhi and after reaching the Red Fort on 11 May, they requested Bahadur Shah Zafar to become their leader. The army along with Bahadur Shah Zafar killed many British in Delhi and snatched Delhi from the British. The British people fled from inside Delhi and started living in camps on the outskirts. Here he was waiting for his army to arrive.

The army arrived in September, and a war again broke out in Delhi between Indian soldiers and the British army. After much bloodshed, the British army won Delhi. Bahadur Shah Zafar also fled from the Red Fort and hid in Humayun’s tomb. During the same time, Captain William Hodson was sent as a mediator. Zafar asked to surrender, but requested to spare his life. His point was accepted. Hodgson then reached Humayun’s tomb to capture Zafar’s two sons, Mirza Mughal and Khizar Sultan, and his grandson Mirza Abu Bakr. This incident happened on 22 September. He also put forward the same condition of surrender and like his father, demanded his life.

Princes were put to death at the bloody door
After much discussion the prince agreed to surrender. Hodgson, along with his army, started leading the three princes towards the Red Fort. When they reached the Bloody Gates, Hodgson says, the crowd began to threaten them and tried to free the princes. Then the bullock carts of the princes were stopped at Khooni Gate and they were asked to alight. Hundreds of people had gathered there. Hodgson told him that these princes kill women and children, and the government has sent them to punish them. Just then Hodson took out his gun, asked the princes to take off their upper clothes and then shot all three of them one after the other. Due to the death of three Mughal princes, this door got the name Khooni Darwaza. Their dead bodies remained hanging on this door for 3 days.
