Does a train derail when emergency brakes are applied? This question was asked, you will be surprised to know the answer

After railway accidents, you must have often heard that the train driver applied emergency brakes and the train slipped and derailed. But does this really happen? Does the train really derail after applying emergency brakes? If so, then why is emergency brake applied at all? The same question was asked on the social media platform Quora, which was answered by Animesh Kumar Sinha, a former engineer of the Indian Railways.

He said, there is a misconception among common people that applying emergency brakes causes the train to derail. Let us know what is the complete system for stopping a train? It has two parts. First, generally the brake is present in every wheel, which is applied from the first to the last coach. It takes some time. Also, when the air pressure in the brake cylinder reaches its maximum, then the brake is applied. Second, it takes some time even after applying the brake.

What difference does it make to apply emergency braking?
Now know what is the difference in applying emergency brake? During emergency brake, the braking force on the wheels of every coach is more and remains the same. That is, the brake pressure on every wheel is the same. That is why the train stops immediately. According to the LHB Maintenance Manual published by the Railway Ministry, there is no possibility of the train slipping or derailing during emergency brake.

Why does it stop in a short distance?
Now the question is why does the train stop in a short distance after applying emergency brakes? So know that when the driver applies the brakes, the signal reaches the first coach from the engine, then goes to the second, third and then to the last coach. If in normal braking, it takes 10 seconds for the signal to reach from the first coach to the 24th coach, then in emergency braking it will take only 4 seconds. If the train is running at a speed of 110 kilometers per hour, then on applying emergency brakes it will stop about 260 meters earlier.
