Is the moon really shrinking, how much should we worry about it? Know interesting facts

The moon affects every activity on earth. If there is no moon, there will be no light on earth. The sea will rise. The speed of the earth will also be affected. A time will come when everything will become so cold that it will not only become difficult but impossible for humans to live there. Now it is being claimed on social media that the moon is shrinking due to seismic activities. First of all, is this really happening? And if it is happening, what effect will it have on humans?

The Moon has been getting smaller over several hundred million years
According to the BBC report, the moon has been shrinking for the last several hundred million years. Currently, its core has shrunk by about 50 meters i.e. 164 feet. Scientists have confirmed this after analyzing thrust fault photographs on the surface of the moon. These photographs were taken by Apollo astronauts and recently by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. Researchers found that earthquake measuring instruments left on the moon during the Apollo era have found some flaws here.

The radius of the inner core of the Moon is 500 kilometers
Scientists also found that the Moon has an inner core with a radius of about 500 kilometers. It is partially molten, but much less dense than Earth’s core. Its interior is still very cold and is contracting. Its outer part, the crust, is very fragile. So as the inner part contracts, the crust breaks, resulting in parts of the crust being pulled toward the core. Some of the lines on the Moon are cracks and wrinkles formed by that slow contraction. Evidence suggests that this process continues today. The stress on the Moon due to Earth’s gravity has a greater effect.

Will it have any effect on humans?
Now the question is, will it have an effect on humans? According to scientists, this is not necessary. The rate of shrinkage of the moon is very slow. For now, due to the shrinkage of the moon, the apparent size of the moon in the sky will not change so much that it starts affecting humans. Since its mass is not decreasing, the gravitational force between the Earth and the Moon will remain the same. When the gravitational force is the same, then its effect on the Earth will not be negative either. However, the size of the moon’s orbit is increasing by about 3.8 cm per year. That is why it is moving away from us. Due to this, the rotation of the Earth is slowing down. This affects the length of the day and about 2.3 milliseconds are added to the length of a day on Earth.
