Gaza ceasefire: Two far-right ministers of Israel have threatened to resign over the ceasefire. The ministers said that if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agrees to US President Joe Biden’s Gaza ceasefire proposal, they will resign. Apart from this, they have also talked about breaking the alliance with the ruling party.
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said they were against any agreement before Hamas was destroyed. On the other hand, opposition leader Yair Lapid has said that if Netanyahu accepts Joe Biden’s proposal, he will support the government. At the same time, Prime Minister Netanyahu himself stressed that ‘there will be no permanent ceasefire until Hamas’ military and governance capabilities are destroyed and all hostages are released.
US Gaza ceasefire plan
US President Joe Biden has proposed a three-part ceasefire. Under this, there will first be a ceasefire of six weeks. During this time the Israel Defense Force (IDF) will withdraw from the populated areas of Gaza. On the other hand, in the first phase itself, Hamas will release all Israeli hostages. During this time, a permanent ‘cessation of hostilities’ and a major reconstruction plan for Gaza will be made.
Ceasefire is a big negligence: Israeli minister
Following Biden’s proposal, in a post on social media on Saturday, Israeli Minister Smotrich told Netanyahu that he would not be part of a government that agrees to the proposed framework and ends the war without destroying Hamas and bringing back all the hostages. Echoing his words, Minister Ben-Gvir said, “This agreement means ending the war and abandoning the goal of destroying Hamas. This is a reckless agreement, a victory for terrorism and a security threat to the State of Israel.” He vowed to “dissolve the government” rather than agree to the proposal.
The government is running with the cooperation of both the ministers
In fact, Netanyahu’s government is running with the support of the right-wing coalition. Ben-Gvir’s Otzma Jewish Party has six seats. On the other hand, Smotrich’s Religious Zionism Party has seven seats but Yair Lapid, one of Israel’s most influential opposition leaders, has promised his support to the troubled Prime Minister. His Yesh Atid Party has 24 seats. He has said that even if Ben-Gvir and Smotrich leave the government, Netanyahu still has our security cover for the hostage deal. Now it will be interesting to see what decision Netanyahu takes.
