The central government that is needed to run India smoothly consists of people from two houses. First is Lok Sabha and second is Rajya Sabha. That is, if someone wants to become a minister or Prime Minister in the central government, then it is mandatory for him to be a member of Rajya Sabha or Lok Sabha. Let us tell you today how seats in Rajya Sabha become vacant and how long is their tenure.
When do Rajya Sabha seats become vacant
Like the Lok Sabha, the Rajya Sabha is never completely dissolved. Rather, the tenure of one-third of its members is completed every two years. That is, elections are held for the Rajya Sabha every two years and one-third of its members are changed or repeated. In simple words, the Rajya Sabha remains forever; it is never dissolved.
How long is its tenure
Generally, the tenure of Rajya Sabha MPs is 6 years. But sometimes in some cases, they also have to face suspension. In the year 2023, 141 Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs were suspended within two days. Rajya Sabha MPs were suspended under Rule 255 of Rajya Sabha. This rule says that if the Chairman feels that the behavior of a member of Rajya Sabha is grossly disorderly, then he can direct him to leave the Rajya Sabha. However, under this rule, the suspension will be applicable only for that day. That is, the member will have to stay out of the House on that day.
The biggest suspension
Let us tell you that the biggest suspension of MPs happened in the year 1989. Actually, the MPs were protesting against the tabling of the Thakkar Commission report on the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the Parliament and were creating a ruckus over it. Due to this, the Speaker suspended 63 MPs in one day. After the suspension of 63 MPs, 04 other MPs also left the House.
