In Patna, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India conducted an awareness campaign on animal birth control. Anushka Yadav and Utkarsh Garg from PETA said that animals neither have any understanding nor any means of population control. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the governments to think about animal control. It is the responsibility of institutions like the Municipal Corporation to sterilize the dogs in the city so that their population does not increase. Supporters associated with PETA India appealed to use contraceptives to create awareness on this subject and also distributed leaflets.
Instructions for running animal birth control program
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals India organised an exhibition in Patna on the eve of World Population Day (July 11) to raise awareness about animal birth control. Utkarsh Garg, PETA India’s campaigns coordinator, said, “Every year, millions of dogs and cats suffer on the streets or die in animal shelters because they cannot find a loving home. If you are considering welcoming a dog or cat into your family, adopt a homeless animal instead of buying one. The central government has notified the Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023 for the states under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. As per this rule, the concerned local bodies like Nagar Palika, Nagar Nigam and Panchayat have been directed to run animal birth control programmes for sterilisation and vaccination of community dogs.
These animals are struggling to survive on the streets
In Patna and across India, countless dogs and cats struggle to survive on the streets. Many of these animals face starvation on a daily basis, are beaten or maimed by people. They are at risk of being hit by vehicles on the road, or abused in other ways. Many of these animals are sent to animal shelters due to a lack of good homes. Every time someone buys a dog or cat from a pet store or a breeder, a homeless animal loses its chance of finding a home. According to leading animal welfare experts, an estimated 70 million dogs and cats in India spend their lives on the streets. The simple solution to this problem is ABC. Spaying one female dog can prevent the birth of 67,000 litters over six years, and spaying one female cat can prevent the birth of 420,000 litters. Animals that are sterilized live longer, healthier lives and, in the case of females, are less likely to stray, fight, or bite.
