23 countries are achieving the target, Canada is lagging behind
According to a report by news portal Politico, former arms control official of the US State Department Max Bergman says that everyone is spending more, but Canada is not even trying. The report said that 23 US senators expressed disappointment in a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. In this, an appeal has been made to Canada to fulfill its responsibility. NATO countries had committed to spend 2% of their country’s GDP on defense in 2014. Out of 32 countries, 23 are about to achieve this target, but Canada is still behind. NATO diplomats and officials have expressed their concerns over this stance of Canada. Some even believe that Canada is weakening NATO. The US Congress official said that they will continue to put pressure on Canada, as there is no penalty for not achieving the target.
The 2% limit is the minimum
Now many big issues including the Ukraine war will be raised in the NATO conference being held in America. The issue of NATO’s defense budget will also be raised in it. It will be told that 2 percent is not the limit for the defense budget, but it is the minimum limit. Countries like America, Poland, Norway and Estonia have already crossed the 2% limit.
