What disease is thalassemia
Thalassemia is a kind of blood disorder, which is of two types. First- Thalassemia Major and second- Thalassemia Minor. Popatlal and Madhubala have Thalassemia Minor. In this, the level of hemoglobin falls a lot which can be dangerous in the future. If any one of the parents has Thalassemia (Thalassemia Minor), then the children can also have it. If both the parents have Thalassemia Minor, then there is a 25% chance that the children can have Thalassemia Major.
What is the difference between thalassemia minor and major
In thalassemia major, the body produces excessive amount of hemoglobin i.e. red blood cells, which carry oxygen from one place to another in the body, whereas in thalassemia minor, less hemoglobin is produced in the body than required, which is very dangerous.
What are the symptoms of thalassemia
1. Bones do not grow properly. There is more problem in facial bones.
2. The colour of urine is dark.
3. Children’s growth is very slow.
4. Always feel tired.
5. Skin color becomes yellow.
Treatment of Thalassemia
1. In case of thalassemia major, blood transfusion has to be done every two-three weeks.
2. Medicines have to be taken continuously in this disease.
3. Surgery may also be required to treat thalassemia.
