Varanasi. The use of Hindi and English language is common in the lower courts of India. But in the city of Mahadev, Kashi, there is a unique lawyer who presents his arguments in the courtroom only in Sanskrit language. Not for 1-2 but for 46 years, Kashi’s senior advocate Acharya Shyam Ji Upadhyay has been fighting cases in Sanskrit language. He claims that till date he has not faced defeat in any case.

When Acharya Shyam Ji Upadhyay presents his case in Sanskrit language in the court room, even the best lawyers start sweating. Sometimes even the judges in the court room are surprised. Many times the judge also needs a translator during the hearing of the case. For the last 46 years, Shyam Ji Upadhyay has been fighting cases in Sanskrit language.

Practice started in 1978
Acharya Shyamji Upadhyay does everything from the application to the debate in front of the judge in the court in Sanskrit language. Let us tell you that Shyamji Upadhyay was born in Mirzapur district but he has been practicing in Varanasi court since 1978.

I made a vow in my childhood
Acharya Shyam Ji Upadhyay said that he had taken a pledge in his childhood to uplift the Sanskrit language. He had heard from his father late Sankatha Prasad Upadhyay that all the court work is done in Hindi, English and Urdu languages. Sanskrit language is not used in the court. After hearing this from his father in childhood, Shyam Ji Upadhyay took a pledge to fight the case in Sanskrit language and then he started it from Varanasi court.

The lawyer is a devotee of Mahadev.
Shyamji Upadhyay is also a devotee of Mahadev. That is why he has installed Mahadev on his chowki. Every morning when he comes to the court, he first worships Mahadev seated on the chowki and then starts his work.

This national award has been received
Let us tell you that in 2003, the Government of India honoured Shyamji Upadhyay with the National Sanskrit Award ‘Sanskrit Mitra’ for his special contribution in the field of Sanskrit language. Apart from this, he has received many other awards.
