A mother woke up in the morning and when she started speaking, she was very surprised at herself. This story is about a British woman. But it is not the only such story in the world. 60-year-old Georgina Galli noticed her sister’s Swedish accent while talking to her on FaceTime. Doctors at the hospital suspected a stroke, but two weeks later she was diagnosed with foreign accent syndrome.
“I had a heart attack a few months ago. I’m recovering,” said Georgina, a mother of two from Hillingdon, west London. “I used to speak really well and now I say ‘ya’ instead of ‘yes’.” Georgina’s accent often makes her uncomfortable in front of people.

She says, “People ask me where I come from and when I tell them they laugh. I smile, but deep inside I feel sad. I was born and brought up in English. I have never even been to Sweden.” It is difficult for her to explain to others what her problem is, even when she is unable to do so.
Georgina added: “I went to the hospital and they thought I had had a stroke. “They kept me in hospital for two weeks and then I was finally diagnosed.” Foreign accent syndrome is a rare disorder that can occur after a stroke to the brain. Georgina added: “I don’t know if I will always have the same accent. I want to raise awareness because the more people know about it the more research will be done.”
This syndrome is a condition that occurs after the brain is affected, when the patient starts speaking in a different style after a health problem or accident. According to Simpson Magazine, 62 cases of this type of disorder have been registered so far. According to experts, this happens due to the effect on those parts of the brain that affect our speaking style.
