Man Smoked In Flight Toilet: Cases of smoking in flights at Mumbai airport are increasing. Since March, a total of 8 cases have come to light where passengers have been arrested for smoking in the flight toilet. According to the police, in one such case, on Monday (5 August), 27-year-old Sarath Purakka, a resident of Malappuram, Kerala, was arrested by the police.

An official said that Purakka was arrested for smoking on an IndiGo flight from Abu Dhabi to Mumbai on Monday, 5 August 2024. The incident took place at 6:35 am. As soon as the flight took off, Purakka went to the toilet and started smoking there, due to which the security alarm started ringing.

The flight staff knocked the toilet door repeatedly from outside, despite this Purakka took about 10 minutes to come out. The flight staff confiscated cigarettes and lighter from him and also handed over the cigarette bud found in the toilet to the police as evidence. Sahar police is investigating further in this case.

What are the rules regarding cigarettes in flights?

Smoking cigarettes in flight is illegal and if someone tries to do so, he can be arrested. However, keeping cigarettes during air travel is not a crime. You can carry cigarettes with you in a sealed packet. Many people also travel with their favorite cigarettes from abroad.

If you smoke cigarettes in flight, you can be deboarded from the flight under the Indian Aircraft Act 1937. There is also a provision for punishment for this. You can be put in the no-fly category from 3 months to 2 years. That means you will be blacklisted for air travel during this period.

What are the rules for carrying cigarettes during air travel?

The rules for carrying cigarettes on airplanes are still somewhat relaxed. According to TSA rules, you will not be prevented from bringing cigarettes in your carry-on and checked-in bags on domestic flights, but cigarettes are prohibited on international flights.
