Aankh Micholi Film Controversy Supreme Court Guidelines for Portrayal of Disabled People


Aankh Micholi Film Controversy: Mrunal Thakur’s film Aankh Micholi was released last year. The film was accused of making fun of disabled people, on which the Supreme Court has given its verdict on Monday (8 July). In its verdict, the Supreme Court has issued special guidelines for films and documentaries being made on disabled people.

The Supreme Court has clearly said that special attention must be paid to the words used for disabled people in films being made on them. Along with this, they should not be made fun of in any way in films. Rather, efforts must be made to show their qualities.

Supreme Court issued guidelines
Speaking on the Aankh Micholi controversy, a bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said, ‘The words in the film promote discrimination and words like ‘crippled’ and ‘spastic’ are being misinterpreted in social perceptions about people with disabilities.’

Emphasis on showing the talent of handicapped people
The court further said- ‘Visual media should show the reality of disabled people, try to show their challenges, successes, talent and contribution to the society. They should neither be mocked on the basis of myths nor should they be presented as severely handicapped.’

The film Aankh Micholi, released in the year 2023, is directed by Umesh Shukla. The film is based on a misfit family. Talking about the story of the film, a man tries to hide some things from his daughter’s family to get her married to an NRI. Paresh Rawal, Abhimanyu Dasani and Mrinal Thakur have appeared in lead roles in the film.
