Acharya Review: Why every director wants to be Rajamouli?

Not only in Telugu films but in films all over India, director SS Rajamouli has now set such criteria through the scale of his films, which is no longer possible to cross. Rajamouli’s movies have a lot more to offer than great story lines like grand sets and brand new action. One thing that is more praiseworthy in his films is the good balance of all kinds of emotions in the film. The main character in his films is always a kind hearted person and tears come to his eyes. In Rajamouli’s films, a lot of inspiration is taken from mythology, figures carved on ancient temples, centuries-old paintings and when you feel that you will understand his style after watching one or two of his films, he brings something new. This newness comes because of presenting the fixed formulas of films in a new way. Many directors are trying to adopt his style and almost all of them are failing. The new name in this episode is that of director Kortala Siva. His latest film Acharya was recently released on Amazon Prime Video. Beautiful special effects, excellent computer graphics, superstar Chiranjeevi and his son Ram Charan as well as the talented Pooja Hegde, well-known music composer Mani Sharma, who has composed music for at least 30 hit films, and excellent cinematographer Thiru make Acharya a sight to behold. There was no chance to be confused. Although the film is entertaining but still no special love emerges after watching the film like maybe watching Bahubali or RRR.

The story is about a greedy businessman (Jisshu Sengupta) capturing the forest and cutting it down to extract minerals. He is eyeing to destroy the Dharmasthala and the nearby village Padaghattam and grab the entire land in that area. For this, he spreads chaos in the shrine and Sonu Sood, the local goon, supports him. A religious place very soon becomes an unrighteous place and to stop this, Chiranjeevi (Acharya) disguised as a carpenter, who is actually a Naxalite and has clashed with the trader’s men before, has to come to the village. After coming to the village, he slowly starts ending the business of Sonu Sood, washes his henchmen. In the midst of all this, suddenly the character of Ram Charan also appears, who is brought up in a religious place, but in reality he is the son of a brave Naxalite father. While searching for his roots, he meets Acharya and then gets martyred in a fight while saving Acharya. Before dying, he requests Acharya to save his village. Acharya finally sets everything right by killing all the goons.

Many films have been made on the stories of illegal occupation of land in the village, so there is no novelty in the story of Kortala Siva. Some things in this film are still market like wonderful music. Mani Sharma has worked hard in the songs. The rhythm of the film’s first song “Lahe Lahe” is tremendous and makes you dance automatically. This song has been picturized on Sangeeta Krish and Chiranjeevi. The melodious song “Neelambari” picturized on Ram Charan and Pooja Hegde is a romantic song and is catchy. Regina Cassandra and Chiranjeevi appear in an item song named “Sana Kastam”. It seems that this song has been replaced in the film. Regina is very beautiful and her dance is also smoky. One such item song is “Bhale Bhale Banjara” which has been composed to show Ram Charan and Chiranjeevi together. The opening tune seems to be influenced by the song “Jahan Teri Yeh Nazar Hai”. The song is a hit but the story is misfit. If there were no songs in this film, perhaps watching the entire film would have been a punishment in itself.

Chiranjeevi is mega star. Chiranjeevi is definitely thanked in any Telugu film made across the country. This is his 152nd film as an actor. Chiranjeevi is very popular among the audience because of his action and dance. In this film too, he has mostly focused on this. Those who like his dialogue delivery have been quite disappointed. Director Kotrala had earlier done films with Mahesh Babu and hence he chose him for a special guest role. Mahesh was unable to do that role for some reason, so Chiranjeevi talked about taking his son Ram Charan in the film, but Ram’s role was increased in the film. According to the new script, in the second part of the film, all the focus was kept on the character of Ram Charan. The character of a heroine was kept with Chiranjeevi. Earlier Trisha was supposed to play this character. Then Kajal Aggarwal took her place. She became pregnant during the filming and production was delayed due to Covid. Due to not being able to do justice to the character, the director did not keep his role in the film. There is no heroine with Chiranjeevi in the film but Pooja Hegde has been kept with Ram Charan. Pooja Hegde is a beautiful actress and also dances well. Her romantic scenes, molestation scenes with Ram Charan are very tempting.

Sonu Sood has been made a villain. Due to the humanitarian works done during Kovid, the image of Sonu Sood has become such that he does not seem like a villain from any angle. In this film, his scenes with Ram Charan are good and his getup is also good, but in all the subsequent scenes, he is seen in a very clumsy type of getup, especially in the case of hairstyle. His role is typical. There is nothing new. Sonu Sood does not seem violent even in violent scenes. Jishu Sengupta’s role is small. Apart from Bengali, Jishu is also seen in films of other languages like Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. Apart from this, veteran actors such as Nassar, Tanikella Bharani, Vennela Kishore, Ajay, Ravi Prakash and Satyadev, who are often seen in South Indian films, also appear in small roles. The advantage of taking such actors is that there is no need to work hard on their acting. He himself is such a skilled artist that he puts his life into even a small scene.

The film did not do much at the box office either because at that time Rajamouli’s film “RRR” was raging at the box office. In the story, so much emphasis was placed on the Dharmasthala and the goodness of the people that the basic plot of the film was hidden from the rest of the scenes. The fascination of seeing Chiranjeevi and Ram Charan together in the same film also could not save the film. By the way, Chiranjeevi has been appearing in guest roles in Ram’s films many times, but for the first time such a big role of both together came to be seen in a film, but it faltered due to such a weak story and tired screenplay. Making a film inspired by Rajamouli is one thing and making a film of Rajamouli’s level is another. Kotrala Siva has made good films before this and almost all of them have been popular, Acharya is one phase of his life which he would like to forget. Watching Acharya movie is like a boring lecture.
