Renuka Shahane has spoken openly about this in a podcast given to VR Yuva. She said, ‘I had my first period at the age of 10. Think, now I am 58 and I have faced those days for so many months and years in my life. I have enjoyed my childhood physically that too for a very short time. At the age of 10, my brain was not developed properly and what all was happening in my body. I was lucky that my mother explained everything to me through a diagram, but I was not at the age to really understand what was happening to me and why.’
Renuka Shahane further said, ‘It took me a long time to understand that whatever was happening to me was not bad and neither was I sick. I understood that all this happens to girls. No one in school knew that I had periods, at least in my class. Even my friends did not know. I waited for them to have it and share it with me, then I would be able to explain it to them.’
Renuka Shahane further said, ‘It took at least 3 years for all this to happen and I became very lonely in these years. How do you feel when you want to say something and there is no one to listen to you. I was lucky that I could share everything with my mother, but how much and what could I share with her. No one talked about this in society, no one talked about it in school, whereas every girl should know about this.’

Born on 7 October 1966 in Mumbai, Renuka Shahane belongs to a Marathi family. At an early age, she started doing TV shows on Doordarshan and people recognize her for shows like ‘Surbhi’ and ‘Antakshari’. She has also worked a lot in films and the biggest film of her career was ‘Hum Aapke Hain Kaun’ (1994). Renuka Shahane married actor Ashutosh Rana in the year 2001 and has two sons from him.
