Nowadays people are spending most of their time watching reels on mobile. Reels are fun and interesting videos of 15 to 30 seconds. But many people keep watching them non-stop for hours. According to a survey, now 30 to 40% people are spending most of their time watching reels. Being so addicted to reels is harmful for health. The habit of watching reels all day can cause damage to the fingers. Which is called WhatsAppitis. People who watch reels and scroll for hours develop pain, swelling and weakness in their fingers. Whatsitis is a type of Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) of hands and feet. It is also called WhatsApp Thumb.
This is a condition when a person’s hands and toes start experiencing pain, swelling and other problems due to continuous use of WhatsApp or other messaging, texting apps or reels. These problems usually occur in the thumb and palm as these are the areas of the hand. These are the most frequently used parts of the wrist. Therefore, WhatsAppitis can be seen as a type of repetitive injury.
Know why there is pain in the thumb
When we watch reels and scroll, our thumb keeps dragging on the screen. During this, there is constant pressure on the thumb and it has to be bent in the same manner. This constant pressure and uniform bending damages the muscles and nerves of the thumb. Gradually, pain starts appearing in the thumb and its grip also becomes weak. The reason is that our fingers are not designed to scroll for such a long time. While watching reels, we repeatedly bend and use our fingers in the same way, which puts pressure on them. This can be dangerous for you.
This can also be a problem
When we bend over the mobile to watch reels for a long time, it puts pressure on our neck, shoulders and hands. While watching the reels, our head remains in one position and the rest of the body does not move at all. In such a situation, many people start having pain and stiffness in the neck and shoulders. Sometimes even hands become numb. Besides, sleep also starts getting disturbed. Therefore watching reels should be reduced.
‘trigger finger’ disease
Due to excessive use of mobile phones, a disease called ‘trigger finger’ has started occurring in the fingers, which causes pain, swelling and stiffness in the fingers. About 2% people worldwide suffer from this disease. In such a situation, we need to pay attention to less use of mobile.
