‘Admission in the name of NRI uncle, paternal uncle, maternal uncle’, Supreme Court reprimands Punjab government, High Court order upheld


Punjab Government: The Supreme Court has reprimanded the Punjab government in the matter of NRI quota in MBBS seats. The Supreme Court has refused to hear the petition in the matter of NRI quota in MBBS seats. SC has upheld the order of the High Court.

The Punjab government had also included close relatives and dependents in the admissions under the NRI quota. Which was cancelled by the High Court. Today, the Supreme Court also slammed the Punjab government. The bench headed by Chief Justice Chandrachud called it a way to extort money. The Supreme Court said that it is a complete fraud that meritorious students are not able to get admission and people are getting admission in the name of their NRI maternal uncles, uncles, maternal uncles. Last month, the Punjab government had made this change in the NRI quota.

Know what is the whole matter

Baba Farid University and Health Sciences had issued prospectus for admission in medical UG courses on behalf of Chandigarh and Punjab state. In this, the last date for UG quota was stated as 16th and for Punjab state it was 15th August. It has been said in the petition that the state government had changed the admission process on 20th August after the form was submitted. Apart from this, the rules of NRI quota were changed. It is alleged that when the seats of NRI quota were vacant, other candidates were given admission in MBBS through NRI quota.

MBBS general seats reduced

The petitioners had said in their petition that a notification was issued on 22 August. After this, the institute had reduced the NRI quota to 15 percent. It is alleged that the general seats of MBBS were reduced in Dr. BR Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences Mohali. It was made NRI quota. It is alleged that admissions have not been done as per the prospectus that was issued. It was changed midway.

Know how many seats are there in NRI quota

At present, there are about 185 MBBS seats and 196 BDS seats under NRI quota in Punjab. At the same time, seats are already reserved for NRIs in medical colleges of Punjab.
