There are more than 200 such shops in Ramana Road, Station Road and Tikari Road of Gaya city, where Tilkut is being prepared from sesame, sugar and jaggery. This is the same Tilkut, which is believed to have originated from Gaya district and is famous throughout the country today. Today about 1000 people are involved in the business of Tilkut in Gaya and 5000 families are running from it. Its construction starts from 15th November, which continues till Makar Sankranti. Its market is for 2 to 3 months.

Tilkut’s effect is cool
During cold days, people are desperate to eat Tilkut made from sesame seeds. It is believed that its nature is hot, due to which doctors also recommend eating things made of sesame in winter. Different varieties of Tilkut are made in different markets of Gaya. There is Dangra village in Mohanpur block, 40 kilometers away from Gaya city, about which it is said that Tilkut originated from this village and the jaggery Tilkut here is famous throughout the state. Whereas Tilkut made of sugar is made in Tikari and it also has a different identity.

Apart from Tikari and Dangra, now people are involved in Tilakut business on a large scale in Gaya city also. Tourists coming here from India and abroad also like Tilkut very much. It is said that if Tilkut is packaged properly, it never spoils. In recent years, the state government and Gaya district administration have also extended a lot of support to Tilkut traders and helped in its branding, marketing and packaging. Loans have been provided to many people through the Industries Department to expand the business of Tilkut.

Tilakut here is famous all over the country
Giving information to Local 18 about the business of Tilkut, Lalji Prasad, President of the Tilkut Business Association, says that making Tilkut was started in Gaya by his ancestors. Today the Tilkuts here are famous not only in the entire state but throughout the country. This sweet lasts for 3 months and is prepared especially during the cold season. It is in great demand even on the day of Makar Sankranti. More than 1000 people are associated with this business in Gaya. Due to the warming nature of sesame seeds, it is considered very beneficial during cold days.
