Papua New Guinea Emergency: Riots broke out in Papua New Guinea on Wednesday (January 10), due to which the situation worsened considerably. In view of the worsening situation, the country’s Prime Minister James Marape on Thursday (January 11) announced a 14-day emergency in the capital.
Addressing the media, the Papua New Guinea PM said, “Today we call for a state of emergency in our country’s capital for 14 days. More than 1,000 troops are ready to deal with any situation that may arise.” It is noteworthy that so far 16 people have died in the country due to the riots. Along with this, looting has taken place on a large scale in many shops of the capital.
PM appealed for peace
Marape said tension in the capital has subsided and additional police have been sent to maintain law and order. Meanwhile, he has suspended the country’s police chief as well as top bureaucrats from the finance and treasury departments while the government reviews the causes of the riots. Along with this, the PM has appealed to the people for peace.
He has said that violence is not the solution to any problem. The PM has also assured action against all government officials involved in the violence.
