First a little about this scheme

The aim of the Agniveer scheme is to recruit as many youths as possible in the army. For this, they are recruited in all three armies every year and are known as Agniveers. They are selected for a period of four years and on completion of the term, only 25 percent of them get a permanent commission (job for 15 years). The remaining 75 percent can make a career in any area of ​​their choice according to their interest.

During this period, they get salary as per government rules. If an Agniveer dies during service, there is a provision to give Rs 1 crore to the family, which includes Seva Nidhi package. At the same time, there is a provision to give Rs 44 lakh in case of disability. Pension is given only to those 25 percent who are selected in the Permanent Commission.

Drawbacks and room for improvement

According to the report of The Tribune, four years in the army is a very short time for any young man or woman. Getting trained in such a short time and entering the field and the tenure ending in a short time does not seem relevant from many perspectives.   • Experts believe that a four-year tenure is still fine for the Army, but it is not at all appropriate for the Air Force and the Navy.
  • As per the rules, 75 percent of the candidates selected under this scheme should get a place in the permanent commission, while the remaining 25 percent should be given retirement on the basis of their performance.
  • An Agniveer is recruited in the army with only 6 months of training. In this time, the candidate is not able to prepare properly for his duty. Especially the children coming from rural background, many of whom are malnourished.
  • Looking at the age limit, educational qualification etc., it seems quite unlikely that these candidates are already well trained.
  • Experts also say that there are less technical things in the Army, but what can a candidate learn in such a short time in the Navy and Air Force and what contribution can he make to the Army? This is a big question.
  • To fully understand and handle the workload of the Navy and Air Force, it is important that the candidate has worked for at least 5 or 6 years. He should have good knowledge about complex machinery, electronics and dangerous weapons.
  • If this scheme is extended to at least seven years instead of four years, there is still some scope for benefit. Expecting more contribution from these candidates in a four-year tenure seems meaningless.
