Aligarh’s Gulveer Singh has been given the command of the UP Athletics men’s team in the 63rd National Athletics Competition to be held from 27 to 30 June in Panchkula, Haryana. At the same time, AMU school’s physical education teacher Shamshad Nisar Azmi has been given the responsibility of the chief manager of the UP team.
As captain, Gulveer Singh will participate in the 5,000 and 10,000 meter races in the competition. Jai Shiv from the same district will run in the 200 meter race. Neeru Pathak has also been selected in the women’s category. Neeru created history by winning gold medals in the 400 and 200 meter races in the 19th National Youth Athletics Championship in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh.
UP Athletics Association’s state vice president Shamshad Nisar said that the players who win medals in the national competition to be held in Panchkula will be selected in the national athletics camp, which will be held from 26 July to 11 August. After this, the selected team will go to participate in the 33rd Olympiad in Paris. District Sports Officer Rammilan said that for the first time three players from Aligarh are participating in a national athletics competition. This has created a wave of happiness among the players of Aligarh.
Who is Gulveer?
Recently, Gulveer made a new record in 5000 meter race in Portland, America. In the 19th Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China, Aligarh’s Gulveer Singh brought laurels to the district by winning bronze medal in 10000 meter race. Gulveer Singh of village Sirsa of Chharra won bronze medal in Asian Games by completing 10000 meter race in 28.17 minutes. He is posted as Havildar in Indian Army. Gulveer has won more than 30 medals at state, national and international level. On Uttar Pradesh Day, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath presented a cheque of Rs. 75 lakh for winning bronze medal in Asian Games.
