Alkaline water is beneficial in kidney stones, research revealed

Alkaline water can prevent kidney stones. This has been revealed in a recent research.  Alkaline water, sometimes called high pH water. A popular category of bottled water. The pH level of alkaline water is between 8 to 10 compared to normal tap water which has a pH of around 7.5. The consumption and sale of alkaline water has increased in recent years. There are many groups in the country and abroad who claim health benefits related to alkaline water. Drinking this provides better hydration and also cures kidney stones. People who have increased uric acid have an increased risk of developing kidney stones. Potassium citrate tablets are usually prescribed to prevent recurring stones. However, many patients do not adhere to the recommended treatment. If alkaline water can increase urine pH, it could be a good tool for stone prevention. Research published in ‘The Journal of Urology’ states that alkaline water is good for the prevention of stones. But this does not mean at all that you should not take the medicine prescribed by the doctor.

Water has a high pH

Roshan M. Patel of the University of California, Irvine said, ‘While alkaline water products have a higher pH than regular water, they contain negligible amounts of alkaline, which suggests they may not affect the development of kidney and other urinary stones. Cannot raise urine pH sufficiently. To assess the ability of high pH water to prevent kidney stones, Dr. Patel’s team measured the pH of five commercially available alkaline water products. They also reviewed published data on other types of beverages and over-the-counter products with the potential to increase urine pH. The pH of the five brands tested in the study were about the same, in the range of 10. One product contained a small amount of citrate that was not listed on the product label.

Alkaline water has pH 10

10, the alkaline content will be only 0.1 milliequivalents (mEq/L) per liter. This is much lower than the body’s normal production of 40 to 100 milliequivalents (mEq/L) per liter per day. In contrast, some other products have the potential to raise pH, notably orange juice at 15 mEq/L. Alkaline content is up to. Orange juice also has the lowest estimated cost to achieve the goal of 30 MEQ per day.

Despite potential concerns related to sodium content, baking soda was one of the most effective and low-cost options. New water-soluble products also appear to provide useful and economical alternatives.Dr. Patel said, "Our findings may help guide the selection of other treatments, including beverages and over-the-counter products, to prevent recurring urinary stones. The researchers note the limitations of their laboratory study and the use of urine pH to increase urine pH. Emphasizes the need for clinical trials of alternatives.
