Amalaki Ekadashi fasting story (Amalaki Vrat Katha)-
According to mythological belief, there was a city named Vaidish, in that city lived Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras. All the townspeople living there were devotees of Vishnu and there was no atheist there. The name of its king was Chaitrath. King Chaitrath was a scholar and he was very religious. There was no poor person in his town. Every person living in the city used to fast on Ekadashi. Once Amalaki Ekadashi came in the month of Phalgun. All the townspeople and the king observed this fast and went to the temple and worshiped Amla and kept vigil there at night. Then at night there came a fowler who was a grave sinner, but he was hungry and thirsty.
Therefore, sitting in the corner of the temple, he started watching Jagran and started listening to the story of Lord Vishnu and Ekadashi Mahatmya. The whole night passed like this. Along with the city residents, the fowler also remained awake the whole night. When morning came, all the townspeople went to their homes. The fowler also went home and had dinner. But after some time the fowler died.
However, he had heard the story of Amalaki Ekadashi fast and had also done Jagran, hence he was born in the house of King Viduratha. The king named him Vasurath. When he grew up, he became the king of the city. One day he went out on a hunt, but lost his way midway. Having lost his way, he slept under a tree. After some time, Mlechchha came there and seeing the king alone, started planning to kill him. He said that it was because of this king that he was thrown out of the country. Therefore we should kill him. The king kept sleeping unaware of this. The Mlechchas started throwing weapons at the king. But their weapons started falling on the king like flowers.
After some time all the Mlechchas were lying dead on the ground. When the king woke up, he saw that some people were lying dead on the ground. The king understood that they all had come to kill him, but someone put him to death. Seeing this the king asked who is there in the forest who has saved his life. Then a voice came from the sky saying, O king, Lord Vishnu has saved your life. You had heard the story of Amalaki Ekadashi fast in your previous life and the result of that is that today you are alive despite being surrounded by enemies. The king returned to his city and started ruling happily and doing religious activities.
