Amartya sen: Expressing deep concern over the current situation in Bangladesh, Nobel Prize winner Amartya Sen said that his friend and chief advisor of the neighboring country’s interim government, Mohammad Yunus, is taking important steps, but still have to set a long way to find a solution to the deadlock. Sen said that the situation in Bangladesh has greatly affected him and he is worried about how the country will deal with these challenges.
‘Bangladesh controlled communal forces’
Amartya Sen emphasized that Bangladesh, who has kept communal forces like Jamaat to a great extent, should continue his commendable commitment to secularism. Sen said, “The situation in Bangladesh has impressed me a lot, because my identity is related to the strong sense of Bengali.”
He said, “I have spent a lot of time in Dhaka and started my schooling from there. Apart from Dhaka, I often used to go to my ancestral home in Manikganj. In my maternal grandfather, I used to go to Bikrampur regularly, especially Sonarang. These places have deep personal significance for me. Like many other people, I am also worried about how Bangladesh will deal with its current challenges. ”
Amartya Sen praised Bangladeshi army
Amartya Sen has spent most of his childhood in Dhaka. He started his formal education from St. Gregory School. He later moved to Santiniketan and studied at the school of Nobel Prize winner Rabindranath Tagore. He said, “There have been major economic and social changes in Bangladesh, especially in advancing the rights of women, in which non-governmental organizations like government and Grameen Banks contribute.”
He also said that newspapers in Bangladesh remain relatively independent and many of them are flourishing despite taking anti-government stance. He has praised the Bangladeshi Army for not trying to establish military rule, as it has been in many other countries. He warning the Awami League and argued that such a step would repeat the same mistakes that other parties had accused the Awami government.

Amartya Sen said, “I believe that Bangladesh should use their tradition of working together instead of trying topass to a particular group. A comprehensive approach is needed. I hope that Bengali commitment to freedom and pluralism will remain. I hope that future elections will be more independent, as many people have been claiming. There is scope for change. I am worried about Bangladesh, but I am not disappointed. ”
Asked about his assessment about Mohammad Yunus as the chief advisor to Bangladesh, Sen said, “Younus is my old friend. I know that he is highly worthy and in many ways an extraordinary person. He has made statements about Bangladesh’s secularism and democratic commitment. “He said,” If you suddenly become the head of a country, as it is with Younus, then you should consider various factions. They have Islamic parties and now also Hindu groups. I have full faith in Yunus’s abilities. ”
‘Mosques are also attacked in India’
He strongly condemned the attacks on Hindu minorities and sabotage in temples and emphasized that it is the responsibility of both the government and the public to stop such violence. He said, “This is an important issue because Bangladesh has historically been proud of its efforts to keep their behavior with minorities and communal forces like Jamaat. Unfortunately, mosques have also been attacked in India. These incidents, whether in Bangladesh or in India, must stop.
He said, “It is not easy to promote communalism by presenting some incidents in a select manner. In this way, Hindu-Muslim riots increased and bloodshed in the 1940s. We should consider our past and consider our future in the same light. Selected publicity can be extremely dangerous. “
