First Execution By Nitrogen Gas: In Alabama, America, a murder convict was given death sentence by inhaling nitrogen gas on Thursday (January 25) evening. This is the first case of its kind. It has been told that the 58 year old convict was made to inhale nitrogen gas through a face mask. When there was a lack of oxygen in his body due to nitrogen gas and he died.
According to US news portal, Alabama Governor K. Ivey said that the first death sentence has been carried out by means of nitrogen gas. The state is now pushing it as a simpler alternative to lethal injection. In its new protocol, the state has described it as the most painless and humane way to carry out the death penalty.
Was guilty in the murder of a woman
Kenneth Smith was convicted of murder-for-hire in 1988. He was the rare inmate who had already escaped death once, scheduled to be executed in November 2022, but Alabama officials had to struggle for hours to insert an intravenous line into his body, resulting in his death. Later his punishment was cancelled. This time Smith was convicted of the murder of Elizabeth Sennett, the wife of an instructor. He and an accomplice had accepted a fee of $1,000 from her husband to kill her.
Mask worn in front of five journalists
Jail officials said the execution began at 7:53 pm on Thursday and Smith was declared dead at 8:25 pm. Smith remained conscious for several minutes after the nitrogen was activated. Five journalists were allowed to watch through the glass as media witnesses. Eyewitnesses said that after watching the entire process, they started trembling and were stunned for about two minutes. While Doshi wrote before leaving, “I am leaving with love, peace and light. Love to all of you.”
The Supreme Court had rejected the petition
UN human rights experts and Smith’s lawyer had appealed to the Supreme Court, seeking to stop the death sentence. The US Supreme Court rejected this petition on Thursday evening and immediately after this the work on punishing him started.
