Rathnam Movie Review: ‘Action’ is at its peak in South films. A large section of cinema buffs watch South films only for this reason. Currently, the film ‘Rathnam’, released on April 26 in two languages, Tamil and Telugu, is in the news. Ever since the poster of this action-drama film was revealed, the audience was curious about it. The poster of the film showing blood and mule was a new experience for the audience. However, now the film has come out.
‘Ratnam’ is the name of the lead actor’s character in the film of about 2 hours 36 minutes. It is played by Vishal Krishna. One of the biggest specialties in South cinema is that no matter how much the story of the film is full of mystery, adventure or bloodshed, an effort is always made to add a touch of laughter to it. In the South, Yogi Babu represents the ‘Johnny Lever’ of Bollywood. His comedy timing, style and expressions look very much like Johnny Lever. Whenever Yogi Babu enters the screen, the audience laughs without him saying anything. Even in ‘Ratnam’, Yogi Babu was seen performing his work very well.
First let’s talk about the story of the film. Hero ‘Ratnam’ is a henchman of local MLA Panner Selvam. That means the MLA has full confidence in him. Ratnam is the master of all the dark deeds of the MLA. One day a girl comes to Vellore for an interview. Here an attempt is made to attack him fatally. This is where the film’s hero ‘Ratnam’ makes a spectacular entry into the action. Ratnam saves the girl. However the crisis was not averted. The girl’s life was in danger. Ratnam becomes his protector. Like a shadow, he stays with the girl and protects her.
The whole craze of ‘Ratnam’ live action; Which can also be called visual effects or VFX, but rests on it. In South cinema, a lot of money is spent on live action shots (Live-action shot in filmmaking and video production), very Hollywood style. Dangerous and impossible looking live action shots have to be converted into exact images through computers. This is called Computer Generated Imagery (CGI). That is, VFX are created by merging still or animated visual content and scenes filmed with the camera through imaging software.
If we talk about ‘Ratnam’, then the VFX like the bus falling into the ditch, the truck hitting the car and the hero jumping amidst the fire have become effective. However, the bus action etc. had to be further improved. Released worldwide, ‘Ratnam’ is a mixture of action and VFX. That is, for those who get the thrill of watching bloodshed, fighting, dangerous vehicle accidents, aerial fighting etc., ‘Ratnam’ is a fun film.
In the film, you will enjoy watching scenes like sickle fights, the angry hero pouncing on the goons like a lion. As a director, Hari Gopalakrishnan Nadar has worked hard on the film. He has also written the story of the film. When a writer directs a film, he knows how much depth is there in a scene and how to shoot it from a certain angle. That means the complete image of the scene is in his mind. However, in one line, the biggest feature of action films is its speed, in this matter ‘Ratnam’ lagged behind. The screenplay seems slow at some places.
The hero plays the role of an ‘angry young man’. In Bollywood, Amitabh Bachchan also lived this character for more than half of his film career. However, the angry young man of ‘Ratnam’ is on extreme. The set for the film was prepared on the border of Andhra Pradesh. Visually the film is appealing to the eyes.
The cinematographer of ‘Ratnam’ is M Sukumar. Their work looks great. TS Jai has edited the film. Both of them have previously worked with Vishal and Hari K in Thamirbharani (2007) and Poojai (2014). That means this is an old team, so mutual understanding is good.
Devi Sri Prasad has composed the music for ‘Ratnam’. The background music also thrills. Devi Prasad is also a part of Hari’s old team. He has previously worked with Hari in Aaru, Singam, Singam 2, Venghai and Sami Square.
As far as acting is concerned, apart from Vishal Krishna, ‘Ratnam’ has Priya Bhavani Shankar, Samuthirakani, Yogi Babu and Gautham Menon in lead roles. The film has been produced by Zee Studio along with Karthakeyan Santhanam. Since no big film has been released in Telugu this week, it is a time of great profit for ‘Ratnam’. The publicity of ‘Ratnam’ which had U certificate was also done extensively.
The audience who is a fan of Vishal and has seen Hari’s previous work will like this film. ‘Ratnam’ is different from the category of common South films. This is a high pitch action-drama film. ‘Ratnam’ is a film worth watching for the fans of South cinema.
