Apara Ekadashi 2023 Date: Apara Ekadashi festival will be celebrated on 15th May, Monday. This Ekadashi is also known as Ajala Ekadashi. By observing this Ekadashi, immense virtue is attained. By observing this fast, fame, virtue and wealth increase. This fast also gives freedom from sins like Brahma Hatya, Parninda and Pret Yoni. On this day Lord Vishnu should be worshiped with Tulsi, sandalwood, camphor and Gangajal.
Significance of Apara Ekadashi fast
Apara Ekadashi has been considered to be of special importance in Puranas. According to religious beliefs, fasting on Apara Ekadashi gives results equal to offering pinddaan to ancestors on the banks of the Ganges. By observing this fast, Goddess Lakshmi is also pleased along with Lord Vishnu and the house becomes prosperous with wealth. According to the Padma Purana, by fasting on this Ekadashi, a person swims across the ocean of water and does not have to suffer the sufferings of ghosts.
Apara Ekadashi fast story
In ancient times there was a pious king named Mahidhwaj. He had a younger brother named Vajradhwaj. Vajradhwaj had a feeling of hatred towards his elder brother. The opportunistic Vajradhwaj killed the king one day and buried his body under a Peepal tree in the forest. It is believed that due to untimely death, the king’s soul became a ghost and started living on Peepal tree.
The spirit of King Dharmatma used to trouble everyone who passed through that path. Once when a sage was passing through this path, he saw the ghost of the king. With his tapobal, he came to know the reason of his becoming a ghost. The sage brought down the ghost of the king from the Peepal tree and preached the knowledge of the other world.
In order to get the king free from the evil spirits, the sage himself kept a fast on Apara Ekadashi. On completion of the fast on the day of Dwadashi, its virtue was given to the ghost. Due to the effect of the fast, the king’s soul was freed from the evil spirits and he went to heaven.
