Today we will tell you about the increasing graph of divorce in India and its reasons. It will also give you information as to which age group of people are getting divorced more.
How much have divorce cases increased?
First of all, it is important to know how much divorce cases have increased in India in the last few years. According to the National Family and Health Survey, there has been a 35 percent increase in divorce cases in the last five years, which is a very surprising figure. Apart from this, the figures of the report released by the United Nations are also scary. According to this, divorce cases in India have almost doubled in the last few years. While this rate was 0.6 percent in the year 2005, it increased to 1.1 percent in 2019.
Why divorce after many years of marriage?
The reasons for divorce were also mentioned in this UN report. In which it was told that the biggest reason for divorce in countries around the world and in India is domestic violence and cheating. Apart from this, people who are getting divorced at the age of 50 do so to get freedom from each other and because of unresolved issues. Also, suffering insults for many years after marriage can also be a reason for this. A huge lack of emotional support has been seen in many such cases.
After a certain age, when women look at other girls or women, it seems that they have suffered more and have to shoulder the responsibility of raising children along with household chores alone. During this period, his partner’s participation was very less, and his work was never appreciated. This is the reason why in most of such cases it is the women who ultimately initiate the divorce.
These are the biggest reasons for divorce
- domestic violence and cheating
- Changing meaning of life after retirement
- empty nest syndrome
- desire to start afresh
- Revenge for many years of insult
- never get respect
- Lack of emotional and physical support
- second chance at love
Why not divorce immediately after marriage?
Now the question is why women are taking the decision regarding divorce only after the age of 50 or 40. The answer to this is their children… That is, when children are born immediately after marriage, women’s concern about them increases, they forget all their troubles and get busy in raising them. This was with those women who were married about 20-25 years ago. This means that mentally the divorce has already taken place, but the decision is taken after many years.
However, today women do not hesitate about divorce and as soon as they feel that there is nothing much left in the relationship, they take the decision. Whereas earlier women used to worry about financial security and raising children, now they themselves are capable of doing it. In such a situation, they do not have to think much before taking a decision. This is the reason why the number of women filing for divorce is much higher than that of men.
At what age are most divorces occurring?
In a study conducted between the year 2021 and 2022, it was told that people in the age group of 25 to 34 years took the maximum number of divorces. After this, people in the age group of 18 to 24 years filed the maximum number of applications for divorce, followed by people in the age group of 35 to 44 and then 45 to 54 years. People aged between 55 to 64 years and above were also included in the list.

Trend is increasing in rural areas also
A few decades ago, it was believed that the trend of divorce was limited only to cities, or it was the talk of people living in cities. But now this trend seems to be increasing continuously in rural areas also. Although this is much less as compared to cities, but the graph has increased rapidly in the last few years. According to a survey, the divorce rate of men in cities during 2017-18 was 0.3 percent, it increased to 0.5 percent in 2023-24. Whereas in women it has increased from 0.6 to 0.7 percent.
In rural areas, from 2017-18 to 23-24, the divorce rate among men remained only 0.3 percent, but among women it increased from 0.3 to 0.4. That is, even though the divorce rate is lower in rural areas as compared to cities, here too divorce cases are increasing continuously.
