The war between Israel and Iran is not stopping. Reuters, citing the Palestinian news agency, reported that more than 100 people have been killed and dozens injured in an Israeli attack targeting a school housing displaced people in eastern Gaza.

Arab countries attack Israel

Today we will tell you about a war in history that you might not have heard about. Let us tell you that 57 years ago a war started between Israel and its neighbours, which is known as the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. In late 1948, Israel’s Arab neighbours attacked it. In that war, all these countries tried to destroy Israel, but they failed.

Let us tell you that the shadow of the conflict between Arabs and Israel is on the entire Gulf region from Morocco. It is worth mentioning that the first Jewish country Israel came into existence on 14 May 1948. After which Jews and Arabs started attacking each other. But the attacks of the Jews left the Palestinians stunned and thousands of people fled to Lebanon and Egypt to save their lives. At the same time, since the formation of Israel in 1948, Arab countries wanted to answer Israel.

how the war began

According to information, in January 1964, Arab countries established an organization called Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). In 1969, Yasser Arafat took over the reins of this organization. Before this, Arafat had formed an organization called ‘Fatah’, which had become quite famous by attacking Israel.

1967 war

The growing tension between Israel and its neighbours escalated into a war. The war lasted from 5 June to 11 June 1967 and transformed the Middle East conflict. Israel pushed Egypt out of Gaza, Syria out of the Golan Heights and Jordan out of the West Bank and East Jerusalem. This left 500,000 Palestinians homeless.

America tried to stop the war

In 1967, as the situation in the Middle East worsened, US President Lyndon B. Johnson warned both sides. The US said that no side would fire the first shot against each other. He supported the international effort to reopen the Strait of Tiran.

But the American effort was of little consequence, as early as June 1967 Israeli leaders began to advocate confrontation with Arab forces. On June 5, 1967, the Israeli Air Force launched Operation Focus and attacked Egyptian air bases. About 200 Israeli fighter jets took off and targeted Egyptian air bases.

Not only this, Egypt was shocked by this attack of Israel. Israel targeted 18 different targets of Egypt and destroyed Egypt’s Air Force up to 90 percent. After this, Israel turned its attack towards the air forces of Jordan, Syria and Iraq and destroyed them.

By the evening of 5 June 1967, the Israeli Air Force had taken over the skies of the Middle East. In the sky, Israel had almost won the war on the very first day, but on the ground, the war continued for the next several days. Because the ground war in Egypt had started on 5 June. Along with air strikes, Israeli tanks and army crossed the border and entered the Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza Strip.

During that time, the Egyptian army also fought bravely. But later, the Egyptian Field Marshal Abdel Hakim Amer ordered a retreat from the front. Jordan declared Israel’s victory in this six-day war as false. It started firing on Israeli positions in Jerusalem. Israel responded to Jordan’s devastating counterattack on East Jerusalem and the West Bank and on June 7, Israeli soldiers captured the holy land of Jerusalem and celebrated their victory by praying at the Western Wall.

In the final phase of the war, the Israeli army reached the northern border of Syria on 9 June 1967. After heavy bombing, Israel captured this area, which is called Golan Heights. The war ended with a ceasefire agreement on 10 June 1967 after the intervention of the United Nations. But this 6-day war changed the map of the Middle East. Arab leaders were surprised by their defeat. Egyptian President Nasser resigned from his post.
