Astronaut Spacesuits Researchers have created a suit for astronauts that will recycle their urine into drinkable water. This suit is being planned to be used in NASA’s upcoming major mission Artemis program. Under the Artemis program, NASA is to send astronauts to the south pole of the moon in 2026. Apart from this, a plan is also being worked on to send humans to Mars by 2030.
This prototype has been prepared taking inspiration from the stillsuits that people used in the famous Hollywood science fiction film Dune. According to the researchers, this suit will purify the urine in just 5 minutes and make it fit for human consumption.
Who developed this suit?
This special suit has been created by researchers from Weill Cornell Medicine and Cornell University. According to the researchers, advanced technology has been used in it. It has a vacuum-based external catheter and a combined forward-reverse osmosis unit that collects urine and continuously supplies pure water to the astronaut directly through the drinking tube within five minutes.
According to Cornell University researcher Sophia Etlin, astronauts currently have only one liter of water available in their suit’s water bag, which is not enough for a long mission.
This suit will be tested soon
The researchers are soon set to conduct extensive testing with volunteers in New York to determine the system’s functionality and safety under simulated microgravity conditions before it embarks on a space mission.
If we talk about the weight of this suit, the researchers have made it compact and lightweight, weighing around 8 kg and measuring 38 cm, 23 cm, 23 cm, it is considered suitable for a spacesuit, which can provide the necessary hydration and comfort during missions.
