Nisha Rathore/Udaipur: There are different special traditions regarding Holi across the country, but on Holi, the king rubs his nose at this special place in Mewar. We are talking about Shri Nathji temple of Nathdwara. Every year ‘Badshah Ki Sawaari’ takes place at Dhulandi in Nathdwara. This ride starts from Badshah Gali of Gurjarpura locality of Nathdwara. This is an ancient tradition, which has been going on since the time of Aurangzeb.
Man impersonates Aurangzeb by wearing Mughal attire
A person is made to sit in a palanquin with a fake beard and moustache, Mughal attire, kajal in his eyes, an image of Shrinathji in both his hands. This ride is welcomed by the temple band’s band playing flute. This ride goes beyond Bada Bazaar via Gurjarpura, circumambulates the temple and reaches Shrinathji’s temple, where the king cleans the steps made in the spirit of devotion to Surajpol with his beard. The people present in the temple listen to the king and the Rasiya song starts.
What is the story behind this?
Area residents say that Aurangzeb had reached Mewar by breaking the idols of God in temples. When he went to the temple with the intention of breaking the idol of Shrinathji, he lost his eyesight as soon as he entered the temple. At that time his wife prayed to Lord Shrinathji and asked for forgiveness, then his eyes were cured.
The Begum asked the King to clean the gulal that had fallen on the temple stairs with his beard. Then the king cleaned the 9 steps outside Surajpol with his beard while descending them upside down and since then this incident has been celebrated as a tradition. After that, Aurangzeb’s mother gifted a precious diamond to the temple, which can still be seen in Shrinathji’s beard.
