Bandra Railway Station Stampede: Many people were injured when a stampede broke out at Mumbai’s Bandra railway station on Sunday (27 October 2024). Congress leader and leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi has described this incident as an example of India’s crumbling infrastructure. He has blamed the policies of the Central Government and neglect of public property for this.
A stampede broke out on platform number 1 of Bandra railway station at around 2:45 am on Sunday, when the unreserved Bandra-Gorakhpur Antyodaya Express was coming towards the platform. During this time, hundreds of passengers tried to board the train, leading to a stampede. At least ten people have been injured in this incident, while Western Railways claims that only two people have been injured. The condition of one of these persons is said to be serious.
What did Rahul Gandhi say?
Rahul Gandhi reacted sharply to the incident, saying, “Inauguration and publicity are meaningful only when there is a solid foundation behind them to serve the public. When people’s lives are lost and bridges, platforms or statues are destroyed within a few months of the inauguration. If the latter collapses, it is a serious sign of neglecting the maintenance of public property.”
Giving the example of the Balasore train accident, he said, “Last year in June, 300 people died in the Balasore accident, but instead of giving compensation to the victims, the government trapped them in legal troubles. The statue of Shivaji Maharaj also collapsed within nine months.” “, which made it clear that this was just a matter of publicity.”
‘Infrastructure that meets local needs is necessary’
Rahul Gandhi said that the country today needs an infrastructure that caters to the needs of the poor and facilitates their business, travel and security. He said India is capable and all it needs is an “effective and transparent system” dedicated to building the future of the country.
