Reports said that the army had to be deployed in the Supreme Court premises to stop the protests. Bangladesh interim government chief Mohammad Yunus on Friday announced the portfolios of the newly appointed advisory council and kept the charge of 27 ministries with himself, including defense. He appointed veteran diplomat Mohammad Touhid Hussain as the head of the Foreign Ministry. Retired army Brigadier General M Sakhawat Hussain was given charge of the Home Ministry.
According to the Dhaka Tribune report, after about four days, activities have resumed in about 29 police stations with the help of the army. Tension arose on Friday morning in the fenced border area of Sitalkuchi in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal when about a thousand panicked Bangladeshi citizens gathered on the other side of the fence in an attempt to enter India and take refuge.
The Border Security Force confirmed that the Bangladeshis were later removed by Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) personnel. The mob reportedly comprised mostly Bangladeshi Hindus. They had gathered around 400 metres from the fence on the banks of a reservoir in Genduguri and Doikhwa villages in Bangladesh’s Lalmonirhat district.
