Bangladesh Election 2024: In the general elections held on Sunday (January 7) in Bangladesh, Prime Minister and Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina has registered a landslide victory from Gopalganj-3 parliamentary seat. According to the news of BDNews 24, 76-year-old Sheikh Hasina got 249,965 votes, while her nearest rival and Bangladesh Supreme Party’s M Nizam Uddin Lashkar got only 469 votes. Gopalganj Deputy Commissioner and Election Officer Qazi Mahbubool Alam announced the results.
Sheikh Hasina has won the Gopalganj-3 seat eight times since 1986. Prime Minister Hasina is going to get the fourth consecutive term. This will be his fifth term so far. Hasina has been ruling Bangladesh since 2009. According to the trends so far, Awami League candidates are leading on most of the seats.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina cast her vote at the Dhaka City College polling station soon after the voting began. During this time his daughter Saima Wajid was also with him. He alleged that the opposition BNP-Jamaat-e-Islami alliance does not believe in democracy.
India is our trusted friend – Sheikh Hasina
Responding to a question, Hasina told journalists that India is a ‘trusted friend’ of Bangladesh. He said, “We are very fortunate… India is our trusted friend. During the liberation war (1971), he not only supported us after 1975, when we lost our entire family – father, mother, brother, everyone (in the military coup) and only two of us (Hasina and her younger sister Rihanna) were left…they also gave us shelter. Therefore we wish the people of India all the best.
BNP and its allies have boycotted the elections
Earlier on Sunday, sporadic incidents of violence were also reported during voting for the general elections. The main opposition party in Bangladesh, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its allies have boycotted the elections. Counting of votes started on Sunday itself after voting ended. Chief Election Commissioner Qazi Habibul Awal said that according to initial estimates the voting was around 40 percent, but this figure may change now.
The picture will be clear by Monday (January 8) morning.
The Election Commission said that in the 12th parliamentary elections, 27.15 percent voting was recorded till 3 pm. Overall, more than 80 percent voting took place in the 2018 general elections. An Election Commission spokesperson said, “Polling ended at 4 pm and counting of votes has begun.” He said the results are expected by early hours of Monday.
The spokesperson said that voting has been postponed at seven polling stations due to irregularities. The spokesperson said that apart from some isolated incidents of violence, voting was largely peaceful in 299 constituencies out of 300. Due to the death of a candidate, voting on one seat will be conducted later. According to the news of the newspaper ‘Dhaka Tribune’, initial results show that Awami League is ahead in the election race.
According to the news, Awami League has so far unofficially won 10 constituencies. According to reports, voting was canceled at one polling station in Narsingdi and two in Narayanganj. The Election Commission has ordered to arrest the son of Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmood Humayun on allegations of election rigging in Narsingdi.
Bullets fired during clash between supporters of two candidates
According to reports, bullets were fired during a clash between supporters of two candidates contesting from Chattogram-10 seat. Two people, Shanto Barua, 24, and Jamal, 35, were shot and taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital. Two people were injured after a clash between supporters of an Awami League candidate and an independent candidate at a polling booth in Sharishabari, Jamalpur. Four people, including a child, were injured when two crude bombs exploded near a polling booth in Dhaka’s Hazaribagh.
Three observers from India are also monitoring the elections.
According to the country’s Election Commission, voting took place at more than 42,000 polling stations. More than 1,500 candidates from 27 political parties are in the fray in the elections and apart from them there are also 436 independent candidates. More than 100 foreign observers, including three observers from India, are monitoring the 12th general elections. More than 7.5 lakh members of law enforcement agencies and security forces have been deployed to maintain law and order during the voting.
