Bangladesh General Election Date: The political upheaval in neighboring Bangladesh in August 2024 and the interim government formed after the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has indicated about holding elections in the country. Interim government advisor Dr Asif Nazrul’s statement said, “Elections can be held within the next one year but there are many factors in this. Reforms in the direction of elections and political compromise are necessary. Other factors include the formation of a search committee and the Election Commission.” , preparation of voter list etc. If all these factors are completed then elections can be held next year.”
Dr Asif Nazrul, Minister of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, said, “Elections are very important policy decisions. Its timing will be decided under the leadership of the Chief Advisor. Only he has the authority to declare it.” Actually, Bangladesh is currently going through an unstable political situation. In the first week of August, the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had to leave the country. Currently she is living in India.
Sheikh Hasina had to resign due to protests to abolish the quota system. After some time, this protest took the form of violence. During this turmoil, Bangladesh witnessed several violent incidents and anarchy targeting minorities, especially Hindus. More than 600 people died during the protests and clashes. Subsequently, on August 8, Nobel Prize-winning economist Muhammad Yunus was sworn in as the head of the interim government of Bangladesh. At the same time, the interim government has expanded the powers of the army to ensure the internal security of the country.
