Apples start selling in the market in the early months of winter. Apples are cultivated in many parts of India. Jammu and Kashmir ranks first among apple producing states in India. Every year around 1719.42 tonnes of apples are produced here, which is 70.54% of the total production of the country. Himachal Pradesh is second and Uttarakhand is third.

Himachal Pradesh is also called the ‘apple state’. Its hilly terrain and climate are considered good for apple cultivation. The cold climate of Uttarakhand is also considered good for growing apples. Apart from this, apples are cultivated in Uttar Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur and Tamil Nadu. But the apples of Assam and Jammu and Kashmir are considered the most special.

Apple Varieties and Scientific Names

The botanical name of apple is Pyrus malus. Apart from this, Malus pumila, Malus domestica, Malus sylvestris, and Malus communis are the scientific names of apple. In Gujarat, it is known as Safranjan. In Tamil Nadu, apple is known as Seema Regu. There are many varieties of apples in India, out of which Kashur Farash, Maharaja, Shirin Dahan and Ambari are prominent.

Apple plants can be planted from November to the end of February, but the best time to grow it is the months of January and February. Apple is eaten in many ways. Many people eat it raw, many people eat it after peeling it, some make recipes and eat it. At the same time, many people like to eat it after drying it.

Apples are in high demand in India

The demand for apples is highest in India. Apart from India, the demand for apples is continuously increasing all over the world. According to a report of the Central Government, about 5.1 tonnes of apples were exported from India in the year 2023-24. This was more than 3.7 tonnes from the year 2022-23. This means an increase of about 34 percent. Apples are imported from India mainly to Iran, Turkey, Italy, South Africa, New Zealand and America. In the year 2023-24, the import of apples from Iran was 1.37 tonnes. This is about 71.77 percent more than the year 2022-23. In this way, Turkey’s imports increased by about 9 percent to 1.17. In the year 2022-23, it was 1.07 lakh tonnes.
