Two days ago, 4 lakh 40 thousand cusecs of water was released into the Gandak river from the Valmiki Nagar Barrage. A portion of that water, i.e. about 3 lakh 30 thousand cusecs of water, is flowing in Gopalganj on Tuesday.
Due to three and a half lakh cusecs of water entering Gopalganj area, half a dozen panchayats of Sadar block and Manjhagarh block have lost contact with the district headquarters. The villages in the flood affected area are flooded. The roads leading to the villages are submerged in water. Due to being surrounded by floods, people are migrating towards the upper areas, but the biggest problem here is that of boats.
Despite the rising water in Sadar block and Manjhagarh block of Gopalganj, the entire area has not yet been declared flood affected. Because of this, the district administration has not made alternative arrangements for boats in the flood affected areas.
Half a dozen panchayats of Sadar block and Majhagarh block fall in the lower area of Gandak. Due to this, when the water level of Gandak increases, dozens of villages of these panchayats get surrounded by flood water. Due to the rising flood water, transportation has been disrupted. Boats are the only means of transport for the people. Those who are unable to find boats have to walk in the water to reach their homes.
