Mamata Banerjee’s party has given Lok Sabha tickets to former Chief Minister Bhagwat Jha Azad and former cricketer Kirti Azad. Kirti Azad Bardaman will contest from Durgapur Lok Sabha constituency. Kirti Azad, a member of the 1983 World Cup-winning Indian team, had contested the 2014 general elections from BJP and was elected MP from Darbhanga seat in Bihar. After this, Kirti Azad contested the Lok Sabha elections from Dhanbad. But, he had to face defeat from the BJP candidate. Let us know about his political journey…
Azad has represented Darbhanga in the Lok Sabha thrice as a BJP MP. At present he is in the party of Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee. Kirti Jha Azad is not only the MP of Darbhanga, his in-laws house is also in this city. As a BJP leader, Kirti Azad contested the Lok Sabha elections for the first time from Darbhanga in 1999. For the first time, he hoisted his election flag in the Parliament by defeating Janta and RJD MP Ali Asraf Fatmi.
BJP had canceled his ticket in 2019 elections.
He lost the 2004 elections to Ali Asraf Fatmi but did not leave his political career. Then he became MP of Darbhanga by defeating Ali Asraf Fatmi again in 2009 and 2014. But, due to his dispute with former Union Finance Minister late Arun Jaitley over cricket, he was suspended by the party on 23 December 2015. After this he joined hands with Congress. Congress made him contest elections from Dhanbad Lok Sabha seat but he had to face defeat here. After losing the Lok Sabha elections from Dhanbad, he joined the Trinamool Congress Party of Bengal in November, 2021.
Kirti Azad came to Darbhanga several times in the last one year
Within a span of about a year, Azad came to his Darbhanga residence several times amid the buzz of Lok Sabha elections and held meetings with his workers and took feedback. During this time, Congress state president Akhilesh Prasad Singh had come to Darbhanga to meet him. Kirti had gone to Azad’s residence and met him and made allegations about his family being Congressmen.
