Two teenagers died by drowning while bathing in the river during the funeral of their grandfather in Purnia. Divers present at the spot have taken out their bodies. Family members are in mourning after the death. On receiving the information, the police reached the spot, took the bodies in their possession and sent them for postmortem. The incident occurred at Mahadevpur Ghat of Navgachhiya police station area. The deceased have been identified as Toofani Kumar, 16 year old son of Arjun Sharma, a resident of Nakadahari village of Mohanpur police station area in Rupauli block and Piyush Kumar, 12 year old son of Sunil Sharma.

Former Mukhiya Sanjay Mandal said that he had gone to Mahadevpur Ghat to attend the last rites of Muni Sharma of Nakadhari village. After the last rites, Piyush Kumar (15) and Toofani Kumar Sharma (12) went to take a bath on the banks of the river Ganga. Suddenly Piyush’s feet slipped and he went into deep water. As soon as Piyush went into deep water, Toofani Sharma went ahead to save him, but by then he too went into deep water and both of them, not knowing how to swim, clung to each other and drowned in the deep water.
After the incident, the family members were crying inconsolably
Here, on seeing both of them drowning, people started shouting. On hearing the noise, a diver who lived in a hut near the ghat came running and dived into the deep water to save them, but he was taken out after a lot of searching, but by then both of them had died. As soon as their bodies were taken out, all the relatives including the villagers started crying. From Mahadevpur Ghat to Nakadhari village, the whole village is drowned in grief due to the cries of the relatives. On receiving the information, the Navgachiya police station got the bodies of both the teenagers post-mortem done in Bhagalpur and handed them over to the relatives.
